If you are still choosing your flight home from a cruise, the airport you pick changes your last day by an hour of driving and up to 25 EUR. Here are both sides, with the actual numbers.
Cruise passengers usually book the flight home before they think about how they will reach it. That is the wrong order, because from Galataport the two Istanbul airports are not interchangeable in any sense — different sides of the city, different journey times, different fares and different behaviour in the afternoon.
If your flight is already booked, skip to the timing section. If it is not, this is worth five minutes.
Where They Are
Galataport sits in Karakoy, on the European shore.
Istanbul Airport (IST) is also on the European side, to the north-west. From Galataport we allow about an hour, and that figure stays fairly steady through the day.
Sabiha Gokcen (SAW) is on the Asian side, to the south-east. From Galataport we allow about an hour and a half, and in the late afternoon two hours. You cross the Bosphorus to get there.
That crossing is the whole story. It is why the two airports behave so differently from this particular starting point.
What Each Costs
Fixed fares from Galataport, in a Vito for up to four passengers:

So Sabiha Gokcen is 10 EUR more before anything else, simply because it is further and on the other side of the water.
The Afternoon Penalty
This is the part most people do not see coming.
Journeys to Sabiha Gokcen in the late afternoon carry a supplement, because the eastbound roads slow badly and the drive stretches from an hour and a half to two hours:

Istanbul Airport carries no such supplement at any hour. Its approach roads do not suffer the same way.
So a 17:00 departure from Sabiha Gokcen costs 85 EUR from Galataport, against 50 EUR to Istanbul Airport for the same hour. That is a 35 EUR difference created entirely by which airport is on your ticket.
The supplement is included in the fare you are quoted at booking, not added afterwards.
Working Backwards From Your Flight
Whichever you choose, the arithmetic is the same: be at the terminal two hours before departure, then add the road.
Istanbul Airport. Two hours at the terminal plus an hour of driving. A 20:00 flight means a 17:00 pickup from Galataport.
Sabiha Gokcen, outside the busy window. Two hours plus an hour and a half. A 12:00 flight means a 08:30 pickup.
Sabiha Gokcen, evening flight. Two hours plus two hours. A 20:00 flight means a 16:00 pickup — an hour earlier than the same flight time from Istanbul Airport.
That last comparison is the clearest way to see it. Same departure hour, one hour of your last day in Istanbul, decided by the airport alone.
Disembarkation Makes This Sharper
Cruise passengers have a constraint ordinary travellers do not: you are off the ship in the morning whether you like it or not, and you cannot go back to a hotel room.
So the gap between disembarkation and departure is time you spend somewhere, with luggage. A morning flight shortens that gap; an evening flight lengthens it.
If you have an evening flight from Sabiha Gokcen, you are looking at a full day ashore followed by the slowest version of the drive. If you have a morning flight from Istanbul Airport, you may be leaving the port almost straight away.
Neither is wrong. They are just different days, and it is better to choose than to discover.
What We Would Book
Istanbul Airport, morning or early afternoon, if the schedule allows it. Shorter drive, lower fare, no supplement, and the road is predictable.
Sabiha Gokcen before 15:30, if your airline flies from there — you avoid the supplement entirely and the drive is the normal hour and a half.
Sabiha Gokcen in the evening only if the flight itself is worth the difference. Sometimes it genuinely is, and then the thing to do is book the transfer with the real departure time so the extra road hour is planned rather than improvised.
Either Way
