You can survive Istanbul on hotel wifi. But there is one thing that breaks without mobile data, and a passenger of ours found out the hard way at midnight with a hungry toddler.
Most guides answer this with a shrug: get a SIM if you want, there is wifi everywhere. That is true enough for sightseeing and completely wrong for the first two hours after you land.
We drive people who have just arrived, so we see exactly where the lack of a connection bites.
What Breaks Without Data
Reaching your driver. Before you land we send your driver's name, his phone number and a photo of the actual car on WhatsApp. If you have no data when you walk out, that message is sitting unread on a phone that cannot fetch it. You are then looking for a car you have never seen, unable to call the person who is waiting for you.
Airport wifi solves this, and both Istanbul airports have it. But it means stopping, connecting, and reading before you leave the building — and that is exactly the moment people are least inclined to stop.
Everything that is not a map. Offline maps work fine. What does not work offline: calling a hotel that is expecting you, opening a booking confirmation stored in an email, messaging anyone, or ordering anything.
The Story That Made Us Write This
A family landed very late off a delayed flight with a small child. By the time they reached their hotel everything nearby was closed and they were hungry.
They could not order food. Not because nothing delivers, but because the Turkish delivery apps want a local phone number and are largely in Turkish — and the family had neither a Turkish number nor the language.
Their driver used his own phone and his own account to place the order for them.
That worked out, and they wrote a very kind review about it. But it should not depend on a driver's goodwill, and you should not arrive somewhere with no way to order a meal.
What We Would Actually Do
An eSIM, bought before you fly. Several providers sell Turkey data plans you activate the moment you land, with no shop, no queue and no passport photocopying. If your phone supports eSIM this is the easiest option by a distance, and a week of data costs less than a single airport sandwich.
A physical SIM at the airport if your phone does not do eSIM. Counters in arrivals sell them, you will need your passport, and it takes longer and costs more than the eSIM route.
Nothing at all, if you are staying one night and going straight to a hotel. But then connect to the airport wifi before leaving the terminal and read your driver's details there.
One Thing Worth Knowing
Turkey registers phone handsets. A foreign phone used with a Turkish SIM works normally for a period and then stops unless the handset is registered, which is an expensive process aimed at people importing phones rather than visitors.
For a holiday this never comes up. For a longer stay it does, and it catches people out. Using an eSIM alongside your home number is the simplest way to avoid thinking about it at all.
Our Practical Advice
Sort it out before you fly. Not because Istanbul is difficult without data, but because the first hour after a long flight is the worst possible time to solve a problem you could have solved on your sofa.
And whatever you decide — check your WhatsApp before you leave the terminal. Your driver's details are already there.
