An early flight out of Istanbul means leaving the cruise terminal while it is still dark. Here is the arithmetic we use to pick the hour, and what changes when the city is empty.
Most cruise passengers leave Galataport in daylight. Some do not.
If your onward flight departs at six in the morning, the drive begins in the middle of the night. It is a quiet, strange version of Istanbul — and it is easier than the daytime version, provided the hour is chosen properly.
The Arithmetic
We work backwards from the flight, not forwards from the ship. Three numbers go into it:
Two hours at the airport before departure. Enough for bag drop, passport control and the walk to the gate without hurrying.
The drive itself. From Galataport we allow about an hour to Istanbul Airport and about an hour and a half to Sabiha Gökçen. Sabiha Gökçen sits on the Asian side, which is why it takes longer.
Nothing extra for traffic. At three in the morning there is no traffic to add. This is the one advantage of a pre-dawn departure, and it is a real one — the same journey at five in the afternoon needs a far bigger cushion.
Two Worked Examples
A 6:00am flight from Istanbul Airport. At the airport by 4:00. One hour of driving. Pickup at 3:00am.
A 6:00am flight from Sabiha Gökçen. At the airport by 4:00. An hour and a half of driving. Pickup at 2:30am.
If your flight is later — say nine in the morning — move everything forward by the same amount. The method does not change.
What Does Not Change at That Hour
The fare. Our prices are fixed per route and per vehicle. There is no night surcharge at Galataport, and the number you were quoted when you booked is the number you pay.
Where we meet. Leave the terminal building, turn right, and your driver is in front of Caffè Nero. The café will be closed at that hour, but it is still the landmark — a fixed, named point that is easy to describe and easy to find.
Your driver's details. You receive the name, the phone number and the car before the day, so you are not approaching strangers in a dark car park.
One Thing Worth Confirming
Tell us the departure hour when you book, not on the day. A three in the morning pickup is arranged differently from a ten in the morning one, and we would rather sort that a week ahead than at midnight.
If your ship's own disembarkation time is later than the pickup you need, say so early. Sometimes the answer is a night in a hotel near the airport instead — and we would rather tell you that in advance than watch you miss a flight.
The Short Version
Two hours at the airport, plus an hour to Istanbul Airport or ninety minutes to Sabiha Gökçen, and no allowance for traffic because at that hour there is none. Everything else — the price, the meeting point, the waiting — works exactly as it does at noon.
