Who Will Approach You at the Galataport Exit, and What to Say (2026)

On a busy morning at Galataport, three or four thousand people leave the terminal in the space of a couple of hours. Waiting for them is an economy that exists entirely in the twenty metres between the doors and the road.

Nobody in the cruise industry writes about this, because it is awkward. We drive this terminal several times a week and watch it happen, so here is an honest description.

Who Is Actually There

Licensed taxi drivers. Yellow cars, official rank. Legitimate, and the fare runs on a meter. The meter is the point: you will not know the price until you arrive, and on a congested morning that number can be considerably higher than you assumed.

Unofficial drivers. Ordinary cars, no markings, a man asking whether you need a ride. Some are perfectly decent people doing informal work. You have no way of telling which, no fixed price, no record of the journey and no recourse if something goes wrong. We would not get in, and we say that as people who compete with them.

Tour sellers. Offering a day trip, a Bosphorus cruise, a Hagia Sophia ticket. Frequently genuine businesses. Also frequently priced for a passenger who has been ashore for four minutes and has no comparison.

SIM card and currency sellers. Legitimate products, poor rates. Both are cheaper a few streets inland, and considerably cheaper at the airport on your way home.

Pre-booked drivers, including ours. Standing still, holding nothing, waiting for a specific named person who already has their phone number.

The Tell

Here is the difference that matters, and it is simple.

A driver you booked does not need to approach you. He knows your name, you know his, you have his number and a photo of the car. He is standing where he said he would be, waiting.

Anyone who approaches you did not know you were coming. That is not automatically sinister — it is how their business works — but it does mean nothing about the transaction was agreed in advance, including the price.

If you have booked a transfer and a stranger offers you one, that stranger is not your transfer.

The Sentence

You do not need to be rude and you do not need to explain yourself. This works:

"Thank you, I have a driver waiting."

Say it once, keep walking, do not slow down. Nobody will pursue it. The approach is a numbers game and you are one of three thousand people that morning.

What does not work is stopping to explain, apologising, or getting your phone out to check something while standing still. Any pause reads as interest and invites a second attempt.

Where We Stand

Our own answer to all of this is to not be in the scrum at all.

Come out of the terminal, turn right, and we are in front of Caffe Nero. Away from the doors, away from the rank, a fixed and named landmark rather than a person waving.

You walk past the whole thing rather than through it, and by the time anyone has decided whether to approach you, you are already somewhere specific with someone who was expecting you.

Booking Before You Sail

The reason any of this is worth reading in advance is that the alternative is deciding in the moment, tired, with luggage, surrounded by people who negotiate for a living and have done this every morning for years.

A fixed price agreed weeks earlier removes the entire conversation. From Galataport a Vito is 50 EUR to Istanbul Airport, 60 EUR to Sabiha Gokcen and 40 EUR to Taksim or Sultanahmet, whatever the traffic does and however late your ship docks.

None of this makes Galataport a dangerous place. It is a working port in a large city, and the people outside are mostly trying to earn a living. But arriving with a plan is worth more here than at almost any other point in a cruise.
