You Land at 7am and Check-in Is at 2pm

Cheap flights land early. Hotel rooms open in the afternoon. Here is how to spend the gap in Istanbul without dragging a suitcase around the old city.

There is a particular kind of tiredness that belongs to the traveller who lands at seven in the morning and cannot check in until two in the afternoon.

It is a common gap. Long-haul flights arrive early, budget flights arrive early, and almost every hotel in Istanbul opens its rooms in the early afternoon. Seven hours is a long time to carry a suitcase.

Here is how to make it a good morning instead of a wasted one.

Ask the Hotel Before You Fly

Two questions, sent by email a week before you travel:

Can we leave our bags before check-in? Nearly every hotel says yes. The bags go into a locked room and you collect them when your key is ready. It costs nothing at most places.

Is an early check-in possible? Sometimes the answer is yes and free, sometimes yes for a fee, sometimes no. Asking in advance costs you nothing and occasionally saves the whole morning.

Ask both in the same message. The reply tells you what kind of morning you are planning for.

Go to the Hotel First Anyway

Even when the room is not ready, the hotel is the right first stop. You arrive, you hand over the bags, and you walk out with a day bag instead of a suitcase. That single act changes everything about the next few hours.

This is also why a door-to-door transfer earns its keep on an early arrival. Public transport with luggage at seven in the morning, with a change or two along the way, is a poor start to a holiday. Being dropped at the door, leaving the cases and walking away free is a much better one.

What Actually Works in Those Hours

Eat properly. A Turkish breakfast is a long, slow meal and it is at its best in the morning. It is the one time of day when the thing you most want to do is also the thing the city does best.

Pick one thing nearby, not three across town. You are tired and you will be back in this neighbourhood at two o'clock. One mosque, one museum, one long walk. Save the ambitious day for tomorrow.

Stay near the hotel. Crossing the city and coming back wastes the hours you are trying to fill.

Do not nap sitting up in a café. It never works and it makes the afternoon worse.

If You Would Rather Not Wait

Book the room from the night before. You pay for a night you do not sleep in, and in exchange you walk into a ready room at seven in the morning, shower, and sleep properly.

For a family with small children after a night flight, this is usually money well spent. For a couple arriving rested, it usually is not.

The Short Version

Email the hotel before you fly and ask about both luggage storage and early check-in. Go to the hotel first regardless, drop the bags, and spend the morning close by over a long breakfast. The gap between landing and check-in is only a problem if you spend it holding your suitcase.
